Toyota Hilux GR Sport: A Rally-Inspired Pickup with Dakar DNA

 Toyota has unveiled a new version of its popular HiLux pickup truck, the HiLux GR Sport, which combines rally-inspired performance and style with off-road capability. The HiLux GR Sport is the first model in Australia to wear the GR badge, which stands for GAZOO Racing, Toyota's global motorsport division.

The Toyota HiLux GR Sport is based on the HiLux SR5 double-cab 4x4 but features a number of enhancements to boost its power, handling, and appearance. The most notable upgrade is the 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which delivers 221 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, a 10% increase over the standard HiLux. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that has sportier tuning and paddle shifters for more control.

The HiLux GR Sport also has a revised suspension system, with KYB monotube shock absorbers and stiffer coil springs that improve high-speed stability and off-road performance. The pickup has a wider track width, increased by 5.3 inches at the front and 6.1 inches at the rear, as well as a higher ride height, up by 0.8 inches. These changes give the Toyota HiLux GR Sport a more aggressive stance and better ground clearance.

The exterior design of the HiLux GR Sport reflects its rally heritage, with a new front grille that features a large TOYOTA logo and a honeycomb mesh pattern. The front bumper has a prominent skid plate that protects the underbody from rocks and debris, while the rear bumper has red recovery points for easier towing. The HiLux GR Sport also has black fender flares, rock rails, roof rails, door handles, and mirror caps, as well as 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires. The pickup is available in three colors: white, black, and red, all with contrasting black decals and GR logos.

The interior of the HiLux GR Sport is equally sporty, with black leather-accented seats that have red stitching and GR embroidery. The dashboard, steering wheel, gear lever, and door trims also have red accents, while the pedals are finished in bright silver. The seatbelts are red as well, adding a touch of flair to the cabin. The HiLux GR Sport comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 4.2-inch multi-information display that shows various vehicle data.

The HiLux GR Sport is not only fast and fun to drive but also safe and reliable. The pickup has a range of advanced driver-assist features, such as a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. The HiLux GR Sport also has seven airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, downhill assist control, trailer sway control, and a rear differential lock.

The HiLux GR Sport is expected to go on sale in Australia in early 2023, with a limited production run of 1,000 units. The price has not been announced yet, but it is likely to be higher than the HiLux SR5, which starts at $47,290. The HiLux GR Sport is not confirmed for other markets yet, but it could be a potential rival for the Ford Ranger Raptor and the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.

The HiLux GR Sport is the latest addition to Toyota's growing lineup of performance-oriented vehicles that bear the GR name. Other models include the GR Supra sports car, the GR Yaris hot hatchback, and the upcoming GR 86 coupe. The HiLux GR Sport is also inspired by Toyota's success in the Dakar Rally, where it has won three times in the past four years with a modified version of the HiLux.

Toyota says that the HiLux GR Sport draws on the spirit of its Dakar success as a hardcore 4WD that will appeal to customers seeking the quintessential off-road version of Australia's best-selling vehicle. With its enhanced engine power, improved handling dynamics, and distinctive styling cues, the HiLux GR Sport is sure to turn heads and thrill drivers who love adventure.
